For years the only production company panel OLED on a mass scale, as well as the sale of TV sets equipped with these matrices, was LG. Market competitors looked at this dominance with a hint of jealousy. It is no secret that even the best televisions from LCD matrices they are not (and never will) be able to guarantee black or contrast comparable to OLEDs.
In recent years, the market OLED TVs it opened a bit. Devices with such matrices (of course provided by LG Display) appeared, among others on offer Sony i Panasonic.
Samsung, LG’s main market competitor, however, remained adamant. It would be difficult to imagine a situation in which a company from Suwon would buy OLED matrices from its rival.
QD-OLED Samsung Display
The end of hegemony? Here comes QD-OLED
Now, however, Samsung has decided to launch a counterattack that is to end LG’s dominance in the market OLEDs. At CES 2022 in Las Vegas Samsung Display (a branch of the concern responsible for the production of screens) presented a matrix made in the technology Quantum Dot OLEDwhich – as the name suggests – is to combine the best features of LCD / QLED and OLED screens.
Without going into technical details, the most important difference between QD-OLED and OLED screens it is about a color filter, or rather the lack of it. The quantum dot technology, known from QLED screens, made this filter completely redundant.
What does this mean in practice? According to LG Display, QD-OLED screens significantly higher brightness i better color reproduction than conventional OLED matrices. Samsung also promises a better HDR effect, which – let’s be honest – in the case of OLEDs is not impressive. It sounds good, although only when testing specific screens will we find out about the truth of these statements.
QD-OLED already this year, but from … Sony
Interestingly, the first manufacturer to offer QD-OLED TVs it will not be Samsung, but Sony, which has signed an appropriate agreement with LG Display. At CES, the Japanese manufacturer announced that the model will go on sale this year Sony Bravia XR A95K – the world’s first TV with a QD-OLED matrix.
When will Samsung Display panels go to Samsung Electronics TVs? The Koreans do not want to reveal this yet. However, it can be expected that this will happen in 2022.
