Canon sued for disconnecting printers

Canon printer users have filed a class action lawsuit against the company for shutting down devices in the absence of ink. It is reported by the Bleeping Computer edition.

The lawsuit began with a lawsuit filed by David Leacraft, who claimed that the office equipment manufacturer had misled him. The consumer said that his Pixma MG6320 multifunctional device stopped scanning documents after the device ran out of ink. Lycraft was surprised, since the presence of ink is related to the printing function and should not affect the scanning function in the MFP.

“Plaintiff Lycraft would not buy the device or pay so much for it if he knew he would have to maintain ink in the device to scan documents,” said lawyers representing the user. In addition to the aforementioned owner of the MFP, several consumers have filed similar claims against Canon.

The plaintiffs’ lawyers believe that the company is forcing consumers to constantly purchase consumables. A class action lawsuit has been filed with the District Court for the Eastern District of New York, with users claiming at least $ 5 million in compensation, not counting legal fees.

According to journalists, they did not find any mention in the technical documentation of Canon that the presence of ink is directly related to the rest of the functions of the MFP. However, the device manual states that printers must be constantly refueled to maintain proper functionality. Canon USA did not respond to the publication’s request.

In mid-October, office equipment manufacturer Brother spoke about the problems with its devices when interacting with Windows 11. Problems arise when brand printers are connected via a USB interface.
