“The invisible hand of the market has acted”. Comments after deleting Confederation’s Facebook profile

On Wednesday after 1 p.m. As reported by the platform, it was about violating community standards in the cases of COVID-19 and hate speech. The party announced a lawsuit against the platform. The Polish government provided its support and interventions with Facebook.

Confederate politicians outraged, the rulers support them

The leader of the Confederation, Krzysztof Bosak, decided that this was an interference in democracy. He also called for laws to protect free speech online:

Meta’s announcement that he will delete the largest and most popular profile of a political party in Poland is an attempt to interfere with democracy. Finally, it is necessary to pass the draft law protecting the freedom of speech on the Internet, presented many months ago by Minister Sebastian Kaleta!

Bosak also pointed out that Facebook had been restricting their activities on the platform for months.

They’ve been lowering our ranges for many months. We also had a problem with publishing videos with the statements of our Members. In general, a lot of interesting things happened. In my opinion, it has long hurt them that the Confederation is so popular. They wanted to change that. The rest are footnotes

– writes Bosak.

I was against lex TVN. I was against repolonization / deconcentration. I am in favor of the abolition of Art. art. 212 and 196 of the Penal Code I have always been against any restriction of the freedom of speech. The hit is the deletion of the Confederation profile on FB. I urge you to look more broadly.

– points out Łukasz Warzecha, columnist at dorzeczy.pl

More information from the country on

The Confederation also officially issued a statement regarding the removal of their Facebook profile.

We consider this a violation of the constitutional principle of the freedom to disseminate information and interference in the upcoming electoral cycle. (…). The action of Facebook strikes against the rules of democracy and thus strikes against the Polish raison d’état

– states the Confederation in a statement.

The government side also provides its support for the Confederation.

The Facebook administration informed Janusz Cieszyński about the decision to remove the Confederation party’s page on the portal due to “violation of community standards”. As the Digitization of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, we are strongly opposed to such activities. Freedom of speech in Poland is the foundation of democracy

– wrote Adam Andruszkiewicz, secretary of state for digitization.

We can have different views, there is no consensus on equal and more equal in the network

– wrote in turn Janusz Cieszyński, also the secretary of state for digitization.

Cieszyński also played the ball on the charges that, despite support for the Confederation, it was PiS who was behind the “attack”.

Contrary to Janusz Cieszyński’s statements, it is PiS that is behind the attack on the Confederation on the Internet. Reporting this profile on Facebook was part of an action against the Confederation. PiS is preparing for early elections and wants to “kill” Konfa on the Internet

– wrote the journalist Jan Piński.

If Jan Piński says that today is Sunday, you can safely go to the store – it will definitely be open

– countered Cieszyński.

Opposition against Confederation and Facebook

Maciej Kawecki, director of the Polish Future Institute, points out that Facebook’s justifications are extremely short and compares them to the actions of the courts.

If you were laughing at the removal of Confederation from Facebook, I would consider it. It can happen to any of you. The most striking thing is that the justifications of court judgments have dozens of pages. The justifications for the decision to delete pages on FB, which often refer to millions of people, have … 2 sentences

– Kawecki writes.

Gosia Fraser, a journalist dealing with the subject of security, writes in a similar vein:

You are glad that the Confederation page has disappeared from Facebook. It’s strange, because tomorrow yours might disappear as well.

From a colleague, Jan J. Zygmuntowski, an economist dealing with digital economy, writes:

The government on Big Tech wakes up only when it is necessary to defend the allies from the Confederation. Digital tax, price collusion, toxic effects on children’s health, breaking labor law? Silence. Are you seriously interested in digital sovereignty?

Confederation surprised that people who they want to imprison, censor, oust from public space (even for sexual orientation), or even make “persona non grata” in their own country, are not outraged by removing her from FB? No shock who would have thought.

– points out Jakub Wencel, journalist of “Gazeta Wyborcza”.

Now you can get quotes from Confederation politicians about the freedom of an entrepreneur to provide services to whomever he wants. It will be fun, but it will not change the fact that digital monopoly practices need to be kept under control and regulation. Because access to their platforms is sometimes to be or not to be.

At the same time, it is worth considering how to force, for example, Facebook to effectively and fairly fight disinformation. Gosia Fraser spoke about the simulation of activities in this topic at the conference of the Institute of Telecommunications in December 2021.

– comments Jakub Wiech, journalist of, among others at defence24.pl.

Such quotes were drawn from the Gromot’s Twitter profile.

Am I happy with the ban for the Confederation? Yes. Do I feel sorry for the freedom of speech? Regret, but we lost her a long time ago. In 2013, I wrote a book about what the internet took from us. Back then, practically everyone was blown away by the ideology of the free market, that a private company can do everything, that an invisible hand, that cyber corporations are charitable organizations, that one should not be afraid of wiretaps, because terrorists and other people are raving about, that who does not jump hop hop hop. Then you had to worry. Now it is too late. Now we can be happy when someone from the right gets banned – because the right will never defend someone from the left from being banned (if so, I can use the ban list for left-wing fanpages and individual people).

– summarizes the columnist Wojciech Orliński.

Not many politicians were tempted to comment on the matter. The position was taken by Adrian Zandberg from the party Together:

Confederation is cynics, they despise human life, and what they did contributed to the covid tragedy. Public health must be protected from harmful disinformation. But that’s what public institutions, under the control of the EU, should be doing, not a corporation-monopoly!

Cybercorps do not care about freedom of speech or public health, but about profits. The anti-vaccine shuria did not come out of nowhere. Algorithms pumped up sick emotions and conspiracy theories while it was profitable and hassle-free. FB is not the solution. It is part of the problem.

I have a problem: The Confederation is my political opponents, anti-strains and ideological fanatics close to the Kremlin (the leadership), but the situation when a global company deletes their accounts is unacceptable for a liberal. My role is to convince their voters, not gag them.

– writes a non-party MP, former PO member, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz.

I hear Facebook will delete the profile. Oh well. I will not cry. This is the end of shura and flat-aliens who, despite warnings, continued to make politics based on ignorance, fakenews and simple stupidity. On sickness and death. Come on guys! The invisible hand of the market worked

– commented Krzysztof Śmiszek from the New Left from the Railway.

Beata Maciejewska, also in Nowa Lewica, spoke in a similar vein.

Confederation’s profile disappears from Facebook. The invisible hand of the market swept the shuffers and the flatworms from the board, who were promoting dangerous conspiracy theories. Private business has stated that there is no room for fake and hatred in the public space. Interesting
