Online safety: Instagram presents a new guide for parents

That minors use it in a safer way is the intention of the social network.

With just a few adjustments, parents concerned about their children’s Internet activity can make them use social media more safely.

In collaboration with the European Union initiatives Klicksafe.de and SaferInternet.at, as well as the StopHate Speech project, Instagram offers parents and guardians a guide for safer use of the social network.

Parents who do not want their children’s content to be visible to everyone on or off Instagram, they can check the privacy settings together with them. There, a public account can easily be turned private.

In this last configuration, the contents are only shared with the followers. For minors who register on Instagram for the first time, the setting is automatically set to “private account”.

Instagram also offers the possibility of blocking people with whom users do not want to interact. The option is accessed by clicking on the profile of the contact to be blocked and then clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner.

Also, all new accounts created by a blocked user can be blocked. When an account is blocked, the other person does not receive any notification. Accounts can be unlocked at any time.

In the “Your activity” panel, you can see the average time the adolescent spends on Instagram each day. If a certain time of use has been agreed with the minor, a daily reminder can be programmed that is activated once the agreed time has passed. This function can contribute to reflect on the behavior of use of the social network.
