The myth of the lifetime of smartphones is dispersed

BBC: The inclusion of a dark topic on a smartphone can increase energy consumption

British scientists dispelled the myth that the dark theme unequivocally extends the working time of the smartphone. They told BBC about this.

Engineers Zach Datson and Mohit Arra checked the statement that the dark theme of the smartphone, in which the screen interface is stained primarily in black and dark shades, increases the life of the smartphone. They were convinced that the inclusion of a dark topic, on the contrary, could lead to a faster discharge of the device battery.

Datson and Arora noted that smartphone manufacturers advise turning on a dark topic to increase battery life and reduce energy consumption. During the experiment, they distributed phones with the BBC Sounds service in dark mode open to the participants with a web page opened on them. Then enthusiasts were offered to set a comfortable brightness of the screen. The experiment was repeated with the usual – light – theme of design.

It turned out that 80 percent of the participants in the experiment significantly increased the brightness of the screens when the dark theme turned on, since otherwise it was uncomfortable to use the device. Experts concluded that often a dark topic does not save energy, but on the contrary contributes to increased energy consumption.

Users who want to consume less energy, Zach Datson and Mohit Arra recommended reducing the brightness of the gadget screen and switch to devices with a smaller display size.

Previously, researchers of US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) called brands that computers with the lowest repairs. Among the worst were Lenovo, Apple and HP.
