Wireless internet is the basis of every home today. We connect phones, laptops, TVs and even bulbs and vacuum cleaners. The more equipment on the web, the more important it becomes its protection. Let’s start with the simplest – password change.
If you don’t know your Wi -Fi password – check them out
Before you change the settings, make sure you know the current password. If it has not been changed, you will find them on the sticker on the bottom of the router – This is a long string of signs, often preceded by the inscription “WiFi Key” or “Password”.
You can also check them on your computer, which is connected to the Internet. Enter the control panel (you will find it in the Start menu), and then select “Network and Internet”. The next step is to click on “Network and Sharing Center” or “View Network and Tasks” (names may vary depending on the system version). Now select “Change network card settings”. From the list of available networks, right-click on your Wi-Fi connection and select “condition”. In the new window, go to the “Security” tab and at the bottom you will find the “Show characters” option – after selecting it you will see your password.
Enter the router settings and change the password
Now it’s time for the most important step. Open the browser and enter in the address bar 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (these are standard addresses of most routers). A login window will appear. If you have never changed data before, try popular combinations: admin/admin or admin/password. You can also look for the default password on the router on the router.
After logging in, you will see an administrative panel. Look for “Wireless”, “WLAN” or “Wireless Network” There you will find options related to the WiFi slogan. Depending on the router model, they can be hidden under the name “Security Key”, “Network Key” or simply “Password”.
Set a strong password
At least 15 characters should have a really good password – Each additional sign repeatedly extends the time needed to break the password. Avoid obvious as “house123” or dates of birth. It’s best to come up with something that you can easily remember, but it’s hard to guess – for example, the first letters from your favorite quote plus a few digits or combined random words along with special signs and numbers, such as “laptopszklanka & door81”
Additional security
The password itself is not everything. In the router settings, also find the option of selecting the security standard and setting WPA2 – this is currently the safest protocol for home networks. Also change the network name (SSID) to something neutral. The name “router_xiaomi” is a hint for the burglar what equipment you use.
What is all this for?
An unsecured network is like an open door to the apartment. The burglar can not only connect to your internet, but also capture sensitive data – bank passwords, messages, photos. It can also use your network for illegal activities. A few minutes devoted to changing the password is a small price for peace and security.
