Gary Rooney was employed as a director of one of the departments of the corporation’s branch in Ireland until November 2022. When Elon Musk took over the X service (formerly Twitter), he sent emails to employees in which he outlined his expectations for the company.
Elon Musk Fired Employee From X Service Over Email
“To build the groundbreaking Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will have to be extremely hardcore. That will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will be considered sufficient,” Elon Musk wrote to employees.
The billionaire emphasized at the end of the message: “If you are sure you want to be part of the new Twitter, click ‘yes’ in the link below.” Elon Musk explained that employees who do not click on the posted link will receive a three-month severance package. Gary Rooney did not do this, and three days later he received another message from the company. This time it was indicated that the employee allegedly confirmed his desire to resign from his position and “accepted the offer of voluntary separation,” he wrote.
Elon Musk’s Portal X must pay high compensation
Rooney responded to the email by saying he never informed the company that he was resigning and had not accepted any redundancy agreement. The former employee, in a statement before the Irish employment tribunal, the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), explained that he did not click on the link in the email from Elon Musk because he suspected the message was a scam or spam. Musk’s company disagreed.
Ultimately, the Irish tribunal sided with the former employee and ordered the company to pay compensation of over €550,000 (approx. PLN 2.4 million) to Rooney, reports The Guardian.
