JAHA: Smartwatches spark concern among people with heart disease
Smartwatches have caused stress among heart patients, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA).
Experts from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine (USA) have found that smart watches and other medical gadgets provide insufficient data on the state of the cardiovascular system. In this case, gadgets can cause increased anxiety and stress.
Scientists surveyed 172 patients with heart problems. Some of them had smart watches to diagnose the disease. It turned out that people who use wearable devices were more likely than others to experience increased stress regarding their condition.
According to one of the study’s authors, Dr. Lindsay Rosman, smartwatches provide insufficient health data and provide it without context. “The psychological difference was greater preoccupation with their symptoms and dissatisfaction with their current cardiovascular treatment,” Rosman said.
The article also found that wearable users were much more likely to use informal health resources to get answers to questions about their condition. Rosman said that too often, watches can only remind patients that they have health problems, without providing new and valuable information.
It was previously reported that sales of smart watches in Russia increased sharply from January to June 2024. The main driver of sales growth was a decrease in the average price of such a gadget.
