IDC: AI-powered smartphones to take 70 percent of global market by 2028
Smartphones with artificial intelligence (AI) support will take over almost the entire market in the next few years, according to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC).
According to the company’s experts, in 2024, shipments of devices capable of working with AI will grow by 363 percent year-on-year, to 234.2 million units. By the end of the year, such smartphones should occupy 19 percent of the market.
The article says that the distribution of gadgets with Gen AI will continue in the future. Thus, by 2028, AI smartphones will occupy 70 percent of the world market. It is believed that by this time 912 million such phones will be released. IDC analysts call AI smartphones devices that have a neural processor and are capable of performing at least 30 teraoperations per second.
“The rapid adoption of GenAI in smartphones is unprecedented in the history of mobile devices,” said Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC. The company’s analysts expect a breakthrough in the AI smartphone market in 2026.
In early July, analysts at IDC named the AI-enabled smartphone category as the fastest-growing category in the mobile device market, declaring that the rise of Gen AI devices will be “the next technological revolution.”
