A powerful magnetic storm will hit Earth. It will disrupt satellites and create something amazing in the sky

There will be no repeat of May 10, but auroras may soon appear over the Polish sky again. This will be one of the effects of the magnetic storm, which may also disrupt the operation of satellite navigation. Fascinating phenomena are happening in space.

Although it is not visible to the naked eye, the Sun has been very restless in recent days. Three areas with magnetic characteristics have become active on it. It has alternately generated 11 strong flares during the previous two days. Most of them were class M, but some approached class X. On Monday morning, there was also a flare of this highest class.

“Aurora alert for Poland”

A solar flare is nothing more than a set of physical phenomena and processes caused by the sudden release of a huge amount of energy in the Sun’s atmosphere. It is caused by the process of magnetic field annihilation. During the flares, so-called coronal mass ejections (CME) can occur. This time was no different. According to the website “Z głowy w gwiazdach”, CMEs should reach us on Tuesday.

“There are many indications that several such CMEs on the Sun-Earth route will catch up with each other and a cannibalization process will occur: waves of high-energy particles will absorb each other and create one strong shock wave. Its collision with the Earth should trigger a G3 magnetic storm and, as a result, auroras occurring in mid-latitudes – including the entire area of Poland” – we read in the service, which even informs about an aurora alert for Poland.

A magnetic storm could disrupt communication

According to the aforementioned service, the aurora will be easy to see from suburban areas with dark skies. However, such phenomena can be very unpredictable, so visibility will be determined by the hours before the CME hits Earth, which is probably Tuesday afternoon or evening. Cloud cover will also determine visibility.

What is also important, in addition to the aurora, magnetic storms are to occur. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management explains that this type of G3 storm can trigger false alarms on control devices, force corrections to spacecraft systems and cause temporary problems with satellite navigation and radio communication.
