The plane “drawn” disturbing zigzags and loops in the sky. We already know what this is about

Last weekend, a special plane appeared in the sky near Koszalin and was “spotted” by local aviation enthusiasts. He performed various types of zigzags and loops, which can be clearly seen on the Flightradar24 website. What was the purpose of his flight? Everything is clear now.

It turns out that a Partenavia Vulcanair P68 plane was flying in the Koszalin area. This is a special machine, and its flight route was not accidental. Specialized aerial photos are taken from its deck, which are then used to create an orthophotomap.

The plane took specialized photos needed for orthophotomaps

As reported by the Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography, a contract was recently signed to develop an orthophotomap and elevation data for cities located, among others, just in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. This task is to be carried out by a consortium of several companies: MGGP, GISPRO and OPEGIEKA. As you can see on the Flightradar24 website, a special photogrammetric plane flew not only over Koszalin, Dąbki and Sławno, but also further west. He left his “trace” in, among others, Międzyzdroje and Dziwnów.

Orthophotomap. What is this?

The plane that was noticed by the residents of Koszalin is a machine belonging to the GISPRO company. which provides services in the field of photogrammetry, geodesy and cartography. Partenavia Vulcanair P68 was flying at a speed of approximately 220 km/h at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters. What are orthophotomaps? They present an accurate image of the surface based on satellite or aerial photos. In other words, it is an aerial photographic image.

An orthophotomap, unlike an aerial photo, is characterized by:

  • orthogonal projection (not central projection);
  • uniform scale for the entire area.

Maps of the area over which the Partenavia Vulcanair P68 aircraft flew are to be ready by the end of this year. Let us remind you that the Flightradar24 website is often used by aviation enthusiasts, among others. to track unusual flights or behavior in the sky. This was the case, for example, in April, when what happened in the airspace after Iran attacked Israel with missiles (some countries then closed their airspace).
