Gatorade Introduces First Smart Patch That Measures What You Lose When You Sweat

It is the Gx Sweat Patch, a smart patch that for the first time “democratizes access to understanding sweat and hydration for each person”

“Each person sweats differently when doing sports, therefore, each one has different needs when hydrating.” This is how Álvaro Ascenzo, Gatorade representative, begins to present the new technological development that the hydrating drinks brand has made to improve the performance of anyone who wants to engage in sports.

This is the Gx Sweat Patch, a smart patch that for the first time “democratizes access to understanding sweat and hydration for each person,” says Ascenzo. With this innovation, Gatorade seeks to accompany athletes by generating awareness of the particularities of each person’s sweat and their sports practices, to enhance their performance.

Using the protocols of sweat tests carried out in laboratories, the Gx Sweat Patch is a single-use accessory that will allow the user to determine a sweat profile according to the activity carried out, and then establish personalized hydration strategies for before, during and after exercise with the aim that the user understands the optimal form of hydration to perform at their best.

According to his representative, the process is very simple: a patch is placed on the person’s left forearm and, after a minimum activity of 30 minutes, uses microfluidic technology and a colorimetric assay, to analyze sweating and provide a result of how much sodium and fluids are lost during each workout in relation to the temperature and humidity of a specific geographic location where the activity was performed. This information is scanned through an application on the Gatorade website using a Smartphone.

With the results obtained, a sweat profile is created while the athlete exercises and personalized sports hydration recommendations are provided by the experts at GSSI (Gatorade Sports Science Institute).

“In the same way that athletes put together training strategies that allow them to continue getting closer to their goals, a personalized hydration strategy is necessary in that search for their maximum potential. Each body is different and, therefore, the profile and sweat rate varies in each athlete ”, said Francisco Mangiarotti, Director of Marketing for Gatorade Latin America.

“All this information obtained gives the user the possibility of defining their own sweating profile to define personalized hydration strategies,” adds Álvaro Ascenzo. (I)
