Deleted photos returned to iPhone due to indexing error
Synactiv specialists explained why many iPhone users found photos on their device that they had long deleted. This was reported by BleepingComputer.
Previously, iPhone owners complained that they found photos and videos in the device’s media library that were deleted many years ago. Synactiv analysts analyzed the current version of iOS and found that the problem with the returned photos was an indexing error. The system indexed old files on the local disk and restored some of them.
Thus, the error is related to deleted documents that may have been saved on the smartphone’s storage device. “The reason why these files ended up there in the first place is unknown,” the report’s authors noted. They also noted that the bug is not related to iCloud cloud storage, as many Apple critics have previously said, accusing it of spying on users.
Journalists from 9to5Mac also said that they had received an official comment from Apple regarding the incident. Company representatives confirmed the Synactiv version. According to them, some photos may indeed have not been completely deleted from the smartphone – then the files were restored due to an error. Apple emphasized that the problem affected only a small percentage of users.
At the end of May, Apple released iOS 17.5.1 update, which corrects a number of bugs on the iPhone. In particular, the company fixed a bug due to which deleted photos could be returned to the device’s media library.
