The aurora borealis will light up the sky again. “There’s going to be a repeat of the entertainment today”

People who missed last night’s aurora borealis have no reason to despair. Experts indicate that the phenomenon may appear in the sky also next night. “Today we are going to have a repeat of the entertainment,” wrote Karol Wójcicki, a popularizer of astronomy, and he gave tips on observing the night sky.

On the night from Friday to Saturday (May 10-11), the northern lights could be observed throughout Poland. A phenomenon caused by an extreme magnetic storm of the G5 category. Coronal mass ejections from X- and M-class solar flares reached Earth and lit up the sky with a colorful spectacle.

However, people who missed the opportunity to observe the northern lights need not worry. According to Karol Wójcicki, popularizer of astronomy and author of the blog “With your head in the stars”, the phenomenon may repeat itself the next night.

“You’d better get a few hours of sleep during the day, because today’s entertainment is going to be repeated!” – wrote Karol Wójcicki on social media. The blogger reported in his entry that the magnetic storm is still ongoing, although after reaching the extreme value of G5, it has weakened slightly to the – still very strong – category G4. “The aurora alert is still in force for the whole of Poland!” – he emphasized.

According to the blogger, the aurora borealis will be able to be captured in photos for two more nights – on Saturday and Sunday. Wójcicki also points out that although the chances of seeing the phenomenon with the naked eye are much lower, they are not non-existent. “Be at the observation site from dusk. Look for shaded areas, with an open view of the northern sky, with cities left in the south,” he recommended and reminded that last night in the Bieszczady Mountains all the colors of the aurora were visible to the naked eye.

Helena Ciechowska from the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences also claims that the aurora borealis may appear in the sky again. The expert pointed out in an interview with the Polish Press Agency that geomagnetic storms of similar strength are observed very rarely and are an exceptional event. – However, this does not mean that this is the end of such phenomena. Tonight the Sun generated another strong flare, this time of the X5.89 class, one that could potentially bring us more observational attractions. The flare was generated from the active region of AR3664, which had previously emitted flares responsible for the spectacle that lit up the sky last night, she said in an interview quoted by .
