Millions of people from all over the world traveled to the United States to find themselves in a strip more than 100 miles wide. On Monday, it was possible to see an unprecedented astronomical phenomenon – a total solar eclipse. Among the people who looked at the sky that day with special glasses was prof. Tomasz Bulik from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw. He reported on this event for the Gazeta.pl editorial office.
Total solar eclipse in North America. First-hand account
I’m in southern Ontario with a group of family and friends. When the total eclipse occurred, all you could hear was a loud “WOW!” Because it’s such a big impression. It’s getting dark. You can see the stars. The solar corona is visible. This is an impression, one might say, not of this earth, but of this earth
– prof. tells us Bulik. This was its third total eclipse. He previously observed this amazing phenomenon in Hungary in the 1990s and in Argentina in 2019. He considers each of them unique.

– Each time the phenomena were spectacular. In Argentina, we were high in the mountains, so the eclipse was low on the horizon. There was a strong wind during the total eclipse. It’s a quieter area where I am in the States. Southern Ontario is a bit like Mazovia – our interlocutor jokes.
What was interesting here was that there were some clouds around and the sunlight was reflecting off of these clouds, so around this dark sun on the horizon there was light from them. It’s a little different every time, but each eclipse is a unique experience. This is something that you really have to experience if you can
– he adds.
“If there were trips from other planets, it would be to see the eclipse.”
In Ontario, where prof. Tomasz Bulik, observed the eclipse, the Sun hid behind the Moon around 9:30 p.m. Polish time. It was noon local time, around 12:00. The sky was very cloudy since the morning, which made observers a bit worried whether they would be able to see the eclipse in full view. – We had beautiful weather. The weather cleared up just in time for the eclipse. It was like made to order. We saw the corona. Venus was visible. Jupiter was visible in the dark sky. It was spectacular. A very nice eclipse and a complete success. We succeeded – enthuses prof. Bulik.
The uniqueness of this event is further enhanced by the fact that this spectacular cosmic phenomenon can only be seen from our planet. – An interesting fact is that such an eclipse can only be seen in the solar system on Earth. Only the Earth is in the situation of having a natural satellite – the Moon, which has an angular size slightly larger than the sun. There is no such situation anywhere else. We are in a unique place. If there were trips from other planets to ours, it would be to see the eclipse – Prof. tells us. Tomasz Bulik.
