As every year, on the night from Saturday to the last Sunday in March, Poland will switch back to summer time. This means that at 2 a.m. on the night of March 30-31, the clocks will be moved forward one hour – to 3 a.m. Catholics should especially remember that we will sleep one hour less that day. In 2024, the time change coincides with Easter and the Resurrection celebrated on Sunday.
The time change coincides with Easter. What about the morning resurrection?
This year Easter falls on March 31. On this day, a resurrection mass will be celebrated in many churches in the morning. It is a solemn service accompanied by a procession with a monstrance and a statue of Jesus Christ. During it, the faithful, together with priests and altar boys, circle the church once or three times. The ceremony is performed as an announcement of the good news of the resurrection.
Parishes celebrating the resurrection mass in the morning usually start it in the morning – at dawn or immediately after it. Most churches announce the beginning of the resurrection at 6:00 a.m. Due to the early hour, people wishing to participate in the Resurrection should take into account the time change. It is not difficult to imagine a situation in which missing it may result in oversleeping to church.
Is resurrection obligatory? In the Church, the procession is celebrated on two different dates
The Church recognizes two traditions regarding resurrection. Some churches hold the ceremony on Saturday night instead of Sunday morning. In this case, the resurrection procession begins at the end of the Easter Vigil liturgy. It is also worth recalling that according to the Code of Canon Law, Easter is a holy day of obligation. This means that participation in Holy Mass is obligatory for the faithful on this day. Catholics who do not take part in the resurrection should therefore attend Holy Mass at a different time.
Residents of the European Union are against time changes
Debates have been going on in the European Union for a long time regarding the abolition of the obligation to change the time. As we reported on Next.gazeta.pl, European polls indicate that the majority of citizens of Member States are responsible for giving up changing their clocks. Nearly 80% of respondents believed that changing the time twice a year should be abandoned. Poles. More on this in the article “”.
