Tom’s Hardware: a PC with at least 40 teraflops of power is suitable for working with AI
Microsoft has begun to name the minimum system requirements for running a PC with artificial intelligence (AI). This was reported by Tom’s Hardware.
First of all, such computers must work locally with Copilot, Microsoft’s AI-powered virtual assistant. Eligible devices will also need to have a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) with at least 40 teraflops of power.
According to experts, the more trillions of operations per second a PC can process, the faster it will interact with artificial intelligence. The material says that Microsoft is deliberately increasing the requirements, since requests for AI tools will constantly grow. The authors noted that the power of computers can also be assessed by how many watts of energy it consumes, but it is easier to measure machine performance in teraflops.
The experts interviewed also explained why Microsoft requires PCs to be able to run Copilot without Internet access. In the future, the number of AI users will increase, so the number of connections to the corporation’s servers will also increase.
In early February, experts from the research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) listed the types of computers capable of working with AI. The first type included PCs with a capacity of at least 40 teraflops, the second – up to 60 teraflops, and the third – more than 60 teraflops.
