On the night from Saturday to Sunday (March 23-24), the sky over Poland was illuminated by the northern lights. Due to unfavorable meteorological conditions, it was visible only in a few regions of the country. However, everything indicates that this phenomenon will repeat itself with a vengeance in just a few hours. “If you dream of seeing the aurora borealis, you may have the best chance to do so next night,” said Karol Wójcicki from the website With Your Head in the Stars on social media.
The northern lights will illuminate the sky over Poland. Such forecasts have not been made for a long time
“Most forecasts agree: a magnetic storm of at least a G3 scale is coming. At least! And we haven’t even had one this year (this winter) yet! These may be some of the best space weather conditions in many years, and the area around the spring equinox is favorable for such events,” emphasized Karol Wójcicki.
As Maciej Dunst, who photographs the aurora borealis, informed on social media, “according to the most probable forecast based on data from Solar Orbiter”, the aurora may appear on Sunday, March 24, around 5-7 p.m. The expert explained that according to the forecast, an aurora of such strength could be visible throughout the country.
Where is the best place to observe the aurora borealis?
“We are already under the influence of fast and dense solar wind, which allowed the observation of the aurora borealis over Poland last evening. At the current speed, the solar wind stream needs about 44 minutes to reach the Earth after passing DSCOVR. There is a chance that we will find under the influence of at least twice as fast a stream, which will extremely shorten the reaction time of aurora borealis observers,” emphasized Karol Wójcicki.
What does this mean for everyone eager to see the aurora borealis? First of all, you need to prepare a little in advance to observe the phenomenon. Due to the full moon that night, visual observation of the aurora will be almost impossible, so you should bring cameras or phones. This phenomenon is best observed away from bright areas of the city, in a place where artificial lights will not prevent the observation of the dark sky. You should also choose a place so that the horizon is, if possible, not obscured by trees or other obstacles. Experts advise to keep up to date with aurora announcements and alerts. As Maciej Dunst emphasized, after receiving the alert, observers will have about 30 to 40 minutes to reach the selected place from which they will be able to admire the phenomenon.
