The end of the dominance of Apple and Google. Epic challenges the giants. Fortnite will return to iPhones

Epic Game Store will soon be available on Android and iOS smartphones. The creators of Fortnite want to challenge the two technological giants, and new EU regulations will help them achieve this.

From March this year The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is in force in the European Union and aims to limit the dominant position of technology giants such as Google, Facebook and Apple. This is mainly about opening previously tightly closed ecosystems so that smaller players can compete with giants on the digital services market.

One of the companies that had to adapt to the new law is the already mentioned Apple.

Epic, the producer and publisher of video games, including the famous Fortnite, decided to take advantage of this opportunity. Epic has just announced that the mobile version of the Epic Game Store will soon be available on Android and iOS smartphones.

We’re coming to iOS and Android! The same fair conditions, available to all developers, in a truly cross-platform store – with amazing games for everyone

– the company announced in a short message posted on the X website.

We don’t know the exact date of the Epic Games Store mobile launch yet, but everything indicates that it is no longer a matter of months, but weeks. In the press release, the company also explained what the above-mentioned “fair conditions for developers” mean.

Epic wants to offer game developers a greater share of profits from sales via the platform. It is to be 88 percent instead of the 70 percent given to the creators of Apple and Google. The company will also enable developers to use their own payment systems and retain 100 percent of revenues from micropayments made within their games.

Epic has been at war with Apple and Google for years.

and Epic. In 2020, the game manufacturer opposed the App Store rules under which Apple charged a 30% fee. from every transaction made in applications and games. As a result, Fortnite was banned from the App Store. The company fought a similar battle with Google, and in this case it was also about a 30% commission on micropayments.

The launch of the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android platforms means that Fortnite will finally return to iPhones, while users of smartphones running Google’s system will be able to download the game in an easier way than before.

There is only one catch. DMA regulations only apply in EU countries. Therefore, it can be assumed that the Epic Games Store will only be available on iPhones of European users, and American players will have to ignore it.
