Windows 12 for free, or maybe for a subscription like Netflix? Microsoft may surprise you

Although many users of Windows computers have not yet decided to switch to “Eleven”, Microsoft has been working on the successor of this system for some time. What do we know about Windows 12 now?

More than two years have passed since the premiere of Windows 11. Microsoft systematically updates its latest operating system, adding new features and removing old ones, which does not always please users. This was the case, for example, with the decision to kill the WordPad application, which –

At the end of 2022, reports began to appear on the Internet that the Redmond company was working on a new version of its popular system, i.e. Windows 12,

Today we know that this deadline will not be met, and this year we can expect “only” another major update for Windows 11 marked with the code name 24H2. This update is primarily intended to sort out the mess related to the system interface. This includes: o “absorbing” the outdated Control Panel into Settings.

Windows 12 on the horizon. What do we know about the successor of “Eleven”?

, the postponement of the premiere of Windows 12 to an unspecified date may be related to the departure of the former head of the Windows division, Panos Panay, from Microsoft. However, work on the new system codenamed “Hudson Valley” is reportedly still in full swing.

What can we expect from Windows 12? Without a doubt, even deeper integration with Copilot and AI technology. Microsoft has made gigantic investments in the area of generative artificial intelligence in recent years. Therefore, we can expect that “Twelve” will be packed with solutions offered by AI tools. This, in turn, may translate into higher hardware requirements of the system itself. Currently, 4 GB of RAM is enough to run “11”. Industry sources report that its successor will require 8 or even 12 GB of RAM.

Microsoft’s operating system will also offer support for new series of computers that will be equipped with the recently presented Snapdragon X Elite systems based on the ARM architecture. These units are equipped with an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) processor, which specializes in AI-related calculations.

Windows 12 for free? Or maybe for a subscription?

Windows 11 was made available to users of the previous version of the OS as a free update. Will it be similar in the case of Windows 12? There may be some doubts about this. It has been said unofficially for some time that Microsoft may completely change its policy of releasing new versions of its operating system and offer it as a service, the use of which will require a subscription fee. found traces in the configuration file of an experimental version of Windows that may suggest such an approach.

The code includes, among others: Windows version and subscription status information. The data was compared to the Windows 11 version 23H2 configuration file and no subscription information was found there. It is therefore possible that Microsoft is making some preparations to make the new Windows available for subscription.

This wouldn’t even be a big surprise, considering the fact that the American giant strongly focuses on the development of its cloud services (e.g. Microsoft Office has been available as part of a subscription for several years). Of course, this does not mean that such an idea for “Windows on subscription” will definitely come to fruition. It is also possible that Microsoft will offer a subscription only to a selected group of recipients or as an alternative to purchasing the system in a box version.
