Bloomberg: A US court found the Apple AirTag smart beacon a “weapon of stalkers”

Apple was unable to prove in court that its AirTag smart tag is not a weapon for stalkers. Bloomberg reports this.

The company demanded through the court to stop considering the judgment that the AirTag smart beacon is a weapon of stalkers to be correct. However, US District Judge Vince Chhabria in San Francisco found the corporation’s arguments unconvincing and admitted that the gadget was used by stalkers. Stalking is unwanted intrusive attention towards one person from another or a group of people.

According to Bloomberg, the decision was part of a class action lawsuit filed against Apple by US residents. The victims alleged that they were harassed using AirTag. They also said that Apple should be held responsible for the fact that their beacon was used for criminal purposes.

“At a price of just $29, the AirTag has become the weapon of choice for stalkers and criminals,” victims’ lawyers noted. Separately, they emphasized that Apple did not think through protective mechanisms, which is why their customers were persecuted.

In October, it became known that more than three dozen people around the world sued Apple over AirTag smart beacons. The corporation is required to compensate for moral damages incurred from the persecution of users by attackers because of the devices.
