Android Authority: Android will be able to send SMS via satellite
Google will add the ability to send text messages via satellites to Android. Android Authority reports this.
Media specialist Mishaal Rahman discovered a mention of a new feature in the beta version of Android 14. A page hidden in the OS said that users would be able to share messages if there was no cellular connection. To do this, you need the phone to be in an open space.
Google’s partner for this service will be the operator T-Mobile, which in early 2024, with the help of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, sent the first text message from a satellite to a smartphone. Apparently, the cost of the service will depend on the specific region and tariff.
Rahman emphasized that previously satellite communications in smartphones were used only for transmitting emergency messages. Thus, in 2022, Apple introduced the iPhone 14 series of smartphones, which received support for SOS communications operating via satellites.
At the end of February, startup Metalenz and Samsung Corporation developed a new technology for unlocking smartphones by face. The Polar ID sensor created by engineers involves capturing light reflected from the face, followed by identification.
