Apple will add protection against attacks using quantum computing to iMessage
Apple has announced the creation of a new encryption standard for the iMessage messenger. This was reported on the company’s blog.
The company’s specialists noted that in the future, security systems that protect user correspondence can be bypassed using hacker attacks based on quantum computing. In this regard, Apple said that it would add a new PQ3 encryption protocol to iMessage.
According to the corporation’s engineers, PQ3 complies with the third level of security and surpasses the encryption protocols of all known messaging applications. Journalists from The Verge noted that the current version of iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber, Line and the first version of Signal have first-level protection.
“Although quantum computers with such capabilities do not yet exist, extremely well-resourced attackers may already begin to prepare for their emergence,” the company noted. The iMessage app with PQ3 will come to smartphones, tablets, computers and smartwatches in iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, macOS 14.4 and watchOS 10.4 updates.
At the end of January, Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman said that iOS 18 would add support for RCS messages and a “smarter” Siri. The OS also expects improved group chats and an updated message encryption feature.
