The plague of fake SMS has attacked our smartphones. How not to be cheated? [TOPtech]

If you have received an SMS in the last weeks, which encouraged you to click the link at the end of the message, then you can be 99 percent sure that it comes from a scammer.

In mass SMS messages, cybercriminals pretend to be, for example, online stores or courier companies and offer the possibility of tracking the parcel live or inform about the need for an additional payment for the parcel, which of course does not exist.

The link at the end of the SMS takes us to a fake website of a shop, courier company or internet payment operator, with the help of which fraudsters try to extort our payment card details or banking login details.

Worse, the victim such an attack may unknowingly become a “pillar” used for further scams, as cyber criminals can use its phone number to send out more fake SMS messages.

How not to be deceived? SMSes from unknown numbers should be treated with a hint of suspicion. Just because the author claims to be a courier company doesn’t mean we should take their word for it. We should also remember that the courier company will never demand a surcharge from us for the shipment via SMS.
