Anti-Valentine’s Day option in a popular browser. Black hearts are not everything

“Peaceful web browsing, free from Valentine’s Day propaganda and with various options depending on the level of heartbreak” – this is how Opera advertises its new functionality implemented especially on Valentine’s Day .

The Opera GX browser has introduced an extension called HeartBlocker. It has been designed so that the use of the Internet is “free of texts and graphics with a candy-colored love motif.”

How it’s working? The text replacement feature scans content for love-related words and replaces them with more neutral terminology. For example, the word “Valentine’s Day” will be replaced with “holiday”, “kiss” will become “physical gesture”, and “couple” will be referred to as “pairing”.

That’s not all, though, because HeartBlocker also offers an image removal feature that “works in a similar way to replacing overly pink images that are likely Valentine’s Day ads.” This option turns any part of the web page that is pink into a different color or darkens it significantly.

Various operating modes. There are black hearts among them

The HeartBlocker extension has two main modes of operation.

  • “Normal” is for those who only find Valentine’s Day irritating. In this case, text and images are replaced with neutral content.
  • “Emo Mode” which replaces sensitive words and phrases with literal explicit alternatives – e.g. “Valentine’s Day” becomes the darkest day”

Importantly, the pink or red colors of the hearts also change and become black. The anti-Valentine’s Day campaign proposed by the browser started on February 13 and will last until February 15 at 7:00 p.m. It is only available in English, French, Spanish, German and Polish.
