Science Advances: gadgets can monitor people using sensors

Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have described a new ability for gadgets to monitor people using sensors. The study was published in the journal Science Advances.

According to scientists, users concerned about security threats often cover the webcam of laptops and other devices with adhesive tape, physically blocking the possibility of surveillance. However, hackers are able to use the sensors of smart gadgets to harm users and steal their data.

As an example, the engineers chose the Samsung Galaxy View2 tablet, which, in addition to the front camera, has light sensors. Similar devices are used in many smartphones, tablets and computers. It turned out that if you change the software of these sensors, you can recognize people’s silhouettes, gestures, and even the data they enter using a touch keyboard.

The material says that such hacking of light sensors is technically difficult, but is feasible. Instead of sealing these sensors together with the webcam, scientists suggested that manufacturers protect them from hacking and limit access to them by third-party applications.

Earlier it became known that enthusiasts had created the first exploit for the Apple Vision Pro headset. In the future, the program will allow us to develop the first jailbreak for augmented reality glasses.
