– The operational activities of Sanok Rubber Company are currently significantly hampered in the functioning of financial and accounting services and sales logistics areas, due to a cyber attack on the company’s key systems – . The company has taken steps to, among others: to “separate the infrastructure from sources of threat and restore the normal operation of IT systems.”

The attack was detected on January 28, 2024, and the company notified the appropriate services about the incident. The management board of Sanok RC also stated that at this point it is not possible to precisely determine the date for removing the failure caused by the hacker attack.

Sanok Rubber Company is one of the largest European producers of rubber, rubber-metal products and combinations of rubber with other materials. The company is a manufacturer of rubber compounds with a wide range of products for the automotive, construction, agriculture, pharmaceutical and household appliances industries.

In recent years, we have heard more and more often about effective cyber attacks on the infrastructure of companies and state institutions. According to a report published by the company, global losses caused by cybercriminals could amount to as much as USD 8 trillion in 2023 alone. Even if these shocking statistics are overstated, they still show the gigantic scale of this problem.

Ransomware attacks have become one of the favorite methods used by hackers. This is malicious software that allows you to penetrate the attacked network and encrypt the owner’s data. The only way to recover this data is to pay a “ransom”, i.e. transfer the requested amount to the criminal’s account.

Cybersecurity experts and US services strongly advise companies against negotiating with cybercriminals and meeting their demands. “The FBI does not support paying ransom in response to ransomware attacks,” we read in a statement published on the bureau’s website.

Paying the ransom does not guarantee that you or your organization will recover any data. It also encourages perpetrators to target more victims and provides an incentive for others to engage in this type of illegal activity

The problem is that for many large corporations, meeting hackers’ demands is often more profitable than a multi-week downtime in providing services, which may result in losses reaching tens, and sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars. Therefore, it can be expected that the number of attacks using ransomware will only increase in the coming years.
