Scientists have discovered huge deposits of water on Mars. Traces of the lake and ice were found underground

Scientists have made extraordinary discoveries on Mars. One of them reveals the history of a water reservoir, the trace of which was lost on the surface, but remained deeper. The second one revealed gigantic deposits of ice on Mars, the melting of which would produce enough water to fill the Red Sea on Earth.

Scientists described in the journal “” a discovery made on Mars. NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover explored the western rim of the approximately 50-kilometer-long Jezero crater. The equipment was equipped with a radar device that allowed it to obtain information about what was 20 meters below the surface. The results turned out to be surprising.

The Perseverance rover detected a distinct discontinuity in the structure of the subsurface layer in the crater. Scientists found older units of the crater floor at greater depths showing discontinuous, tilted layering. However, above the contact boundary there are younger delta units showing regular horizontal layering. According to experts, the phenomenon can be best explained by the cyclic formation of sediments in a relatively low-energy aquatic environment.

Scientists’ theory assumes that the crater was once a water reservoir that began to shrink over time. This caused sediments carried by the river that fed the reservoir to form a delta. What was at the bottom of the lake eroded and led to the formation of one of the structures detected.

This is not the only recent discovery on Mars, because, as reported by the website, Mars Express has re-examined one of the most mysterious objects, Medusae Fossae (a large geological formation on Mars). The study’s results suggest that there are layers of ice extending several kilometers underground, the melting of which would produce enough water to fill Earth’s Red Sea. This is the largest amount of liquid ever found on this part of the planet.
