Four Polish searchers boasted of finding in Germany fragments of a space rock that hit Earth last weekend. Poles found three pieces of a meteorite, which – they claim – looks like a rare specimen.
Poles found the first fragments of a meteoroid that hit Earth
Filip Samuel Nikodem, Michał Nebelski, Kryspin Kmieciak and Kazimierz Magneto boasted about their find on Facebook on Thursday. As the first one stated, it is “probably” a fragment of the asteroid 2024 BX1, which belongs to the eucrites, i.e. one of the groups of stony meteorites. Such specimens are particularly difficult to find because, at first glance, they resemble common earthly stones. It also seems that the rock fragment may come from the asteroid Vesta, which orbits the Sun in the asteroid belt, i.e. between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
“We got it!! Possibly the first fragment of asteroid BX1. Looks rare, possibly eucrite from Vesta. This is amazing,” we read in a Facebook post. Polish searchers also posted three photos showing the find. Their post was shared by the astronomical organization International Meteor Organization, adding that it “seems” that these are the first meteorites found from 2024 BX1. “The first meteorites associated with 2024 BX1, which illuminated the Berlin sky on January 21, 2024, appear to have been found!” wrote on its IMO profile.
A space stone that lit up the sky over Berlin. It was visible even in Poland
2024 BX1 is a small asteroid that entered our planet’s gravitational embrace and roared through Earth’s atmosphere last Sunday. located approximately 150 km southwest of the German capital. However, the passage of the stone was widely reported not only beyond the Oder. The flight of the bolide was noticed by many observers from almost the entire area of western Poland. Many videos showing the flight have also appeared on the Internet.
The first meteoroid (actually a small asteroid) was spotted on a collision course with Earth just a few hours before entering our atmosphere. “Late last night, the IMO (International Meteor Organization) raised an alarm for observers: a small asteroid Sar2736 with a diameter of approximately 1 meter was discovered, which was ON A COLLISION COURSE with the Earth!” – wrote Karol Wójcicki on Sunday on the Facebook profile With your head in the stars.
