The Republican National Committee (RNC) is considering approving a resolution that would declare the former president president Donald Trump (2017-2021) as the ‘virtual’ party candidate for the White House, in the middle of the primary process that has just begun.
The resolution, as stated on Thursday by the cnnwas presented by a member of the RNC and, if accepted, would give Trump access to economic, logistical resources and party informationa significant advantage over his main rival, Nikki Haley.
That decision would break the party’s neutrality during the primary process.
Despite this, Trump would still need to reach the majority of delegates at stake in the process of being nominated as a candidate at the Republican National Convention to be held in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) in July.
Between last week’s Iowa caucuses and next Tuesday’s New Hampshire caucuses, Trump has won 32 delegates, while Haley has 17.
At the Republican National Convention, 1,215 delegates form the majority.
Haley’s campaign spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas, said in a statement reported by CNN: “Who cares what the RNC says? Let millions of Republican voters across the country decide who should be our party’s nominee, not a bunch of Washington bureaucrats.”
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told the network last week Fox news that Republicans must unite around “to the eventual candidate, who will be Donald Trump”. (JO)
