Peru’s Defense Minister, Jorge Chávez, told a congressional committee that there is no evidence among Ecuador’s military authorities that criminal gangs in that neighboring country have weapons, ammunition or explosives from the Peruvian armed forces.
On January 9, a few hours after the raid by a group of antisocials on the television channel TC, Peruvian media such as the newspaper La República and RPP published that the weapons used were of Peruvian origin.
In a presentation to the Congressional Defense Commission, Chávez said that senior Ecuadorian military commanders point out that “there is no evidence” that Ecuadorian criminal organizations possess weapons and explosives from the Peruvian armed forces, as indicated by unofficial information.
He added that last Sunday, during a meeting of the Andean Community (CAN) in Lima, he spoke with Ecuador’s Minister of National Defense Gian Carlo Loffredo, who reiterated that “there is no evidence of the presence of weapons, ammunition or explosives of “Peru origin” in his country.
Considering the versions that indicated that a type of war grenades of Peruvian origin had been found in Ecuador, the minister said that “the Peruvian Armed Forces do not have this type of grenades” and that the Arms and Ammunition Factory of the Army (FAME) does not currently produce any weapons or explosives, “only small caliber ammunition.”
Chávez added that the Defense Ministry is actively participating in a binational border commission with Ecuador and that joint “mirror-like” operations were carried out last year, allowing what the military does in one country to be replicated in another.
In this sense, priority has been given to operations “in three areas of interest”: the bilateral maritime border area, the Tumbes coastal border area and the Amazon region where illegal mining takes place.
He On January 10, Peru’s government declared a 60-day state of emergency in five regions of the country bordering Ecuador. with the aim of strengthening security and internal order in the area. (JO)
