On May 18 last year, WizzAir organized a birthday promotion. During the contract, you could buy plane tickets for PLN 35, but the company canceled most of them after concluding the contract. Tomasz Chróstny said that the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection had received many complaints from consumers on this matter.
Birthday promotion at Wizz Air. Complaints to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection
Promotional tickets from Wizz Air could be booked in the Wizz Air application and on the company’s website. The price was for departure from a Polish airport, with the cheapest hand luggage option selected and random seat assignment.
However, most consumers who bought tickets for PLN 35 did not have the opportunity to use them. The company canceled the contracts the day after the purchase, citing a technical error and declaring an immediate refund of the costs incurred. It only recognized orders that concerned travel taking place within 72 hours of the transaction.
As explained by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, since the ticket price was similar to the amounts for which flights can be booked under various other promotions (from PLN 39 for a round trip), there was no indication that it was not possible to carry out an air flight under these conditions.
In connection with the activities of Wizz Air Hungary, the President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) charged the company with violating the collective interests of consumers.
Consumers have the right to assume that the entrepreneur presents the features of a given offer in a reliable and non-misleading manner. In the case of the so-called low-cost airlines, travelers are accustomed to numerous price promotions. Acting in confidence in the carrier Wizz Air, they decided to buy tickets, made the payment and received confirmation of concluding the ticket purchase agreement. The company canceled most of the reservations, which could have violated the collective interests of consumers
– says Tomasz Chróstny, President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection.
The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) reminds that proceedings are also pending against Wizz Air regarding the recognition of a provision of a standard contract as unlawful. This is the “Flexible travel companion” service. It allows you to create a reservation without providing the names of all passengers until you check in online. However, consumers informed the Office that the carrier does not refund the fee if the flight is canceled by the company.
