On the night from Saturday to Sunday, the sky over Germany lit up after the asteroid 2024 BX1 (initially known as Sar2736) entered the Earth’s atmosphere. According to earthsky.org, the asteroid was only one meter in diameter and did not pose a threat to humans.
Footage has appeared online showing the moment of burning up in the atmosphere. The video was published by, among others, German scientist Michael Aye.
Asteroid 2024 BX1 burned up in the atmosphere. There is a recording
“Late last night, the IMO (Internationa Meteor Organization) raised an alarm for observers: a small asteroid Sar2736 with a diameter of approximately 1 meter was discovered, which was ON A COLLISION COURSE with the Earth!” – describes on Facebook Karol Wójcicki, popularizer of astronomy and author of the blog “With Your Head in the Stars”. As he explains, “precise observations of the object allowed us to determine the place of its entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.” “The impact was supposed to take place in the region of north-eastern Germany, which gave observers within a radius of several hundred kilometers a chance to see a bright bolide in the sky. And so it happened!” – writes the expert.
“The object was observed not only in the vicinity of the German capital, where it was best visible, but we also have observations from Czech bolide stations, e.g. in Pilzno. So we can safely assume that the bolide could be seen from most of western Poland. Check your home surveillance cameras and look for a bright flash in the sky around 01:32 at night,” he reports.
There are more recordings online. According to information on social media, they were most often created in Berlin or the surrounding area, but a flare caused by the burning of an asteroid was also observed in Leipzig.
