An Ecuadorian showing symptoms of hypothermia was rescued last Thursday morning, January 18, near International Bridge 1 by agents of Mexico’s National Immigration Institute. The person attempted to cross the border into the United States illegally.

Authorities took him to shore and gave him thermal blankets and sheets to stop the advance of hypothermia. Once on the coast, a Red Cross ambulance took him to the Salvador Chavarría General Hospital for medical attention.

On the same day, in the morning, members of the same government agency rescued three Mexican citizens who were stranded on an island in the Rio Grande. They were also covered with blankets and officers from the Secretariat of National Defense and the police took them to civil protection facilities in the municipality of Jiménez.

Nearly 55,000 Ecuadorians crossed the Darién Gap in 2023

For example, Ecuadorians who migrate by land and sea face numerous dangerous situations when crossing the Darién jungle on the Colombia-Panama border, and shipwrecks when they decide to move by sea to avoid the jungle.

As they travel through Central America and Mexico, they are also vulnerable to numerous violations of their rights by criminal groups, who regularly kidnap and kill them.

According to authorities in that country, 107,848 Ecuadorians were arrested trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States from January to November 2023. (JO)
