The American airline United Airlines said Monday it had discovered poorly adjusted propellers during checks of the closed doors of its Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft, the same ones that were aborted during an Alaska Airlines flight on Friday.
United has encountered “instances that appear to be related to installation issues in the door stop, for example, screws that required additional tightening,” the company said.
On Friday, an Alaska Airlines passenger plane had to make an emergency landing after its door plug burst.
“We are working to return our Boeing 737 MAX 9s to service in the coming days,” United said in a statement.
United has canceled and expects to cancel 200 MAX 9 flights since the incidentsignificant cancellationsThe airline noticed this on Tuesday.
A door stop is a cover panel used to cover an unnecessary emergency exit, depending on the number of seats available.
After the Alaska Airlines incident, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered operators to ground 171 aircraft of the same configuration.
US authorities are still investigating Friday’s incident, but analysts have postulated that the outage may have been due to a manufacturing or quality control error.
With 79 MAX 9 aircraft, United has the largest fleet of the aircraft in question.
On Monday, the FAA announced it had approved a roadmap for companies to conduct inspections, including left and right door plugs, components and latches.
However, United said it is still awaiting final approval of the full inspection process.
In December, Boeing urged airlines to conduct additional inspections to check for loose parts in the plane’s rudder control system., after an international operator discovered a bolt with a missing nut during routine maintenance. (JO)
