Tokyo’s Haneda Airport returned to normal operations on Monday, six days after a collision between a passenger jet and a small plane that killed five people, authorities said.

“Runway C is operational again today (Monday),” so the airport is back to normal, a Haneda spokeswoman said AFP.

The runway where the accident occurred, one of four in Haneda, has been closed since the Japan Airlines (JAL) plane collided with a small coast guard plane.

All 379 passengers and crew were evacuated alive from the burning JAL aircraft, while five of the six occupants of the other aircraft died.

The runway closure led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, mainly domestic, at one of the busiest airports in the world.

Workers removed the charred remains of the two planes while investigators from Japan, France, the United Kingdom and Canada analyze what happened.

A transcript of communications released by the Ministry of Transportation shows that the Coast Guard plane was ordered to stop and the JAL plane was cleared to land.

But the Coast Guard pilot, the only survivor of that plane, thought he was cleared to go to the runway, where he stayed for 40 seconds before the crash, according to press releases. (JO)
