Strangely enough, when construction work began in 1983, it was not intended to create the largest airport in the world. This was achieved years later, with various extension and renovation works. In fact, there is currently one master design plan, which aims to further expand the air terminal until 2038, giving it the capacity to handle 16 million passengers per year.
Facilities at King Fahd Airport
Although the total area of the airport is 776 km², the buildings only cover an area of 43 km², or 5.6% of the space. This is what the website reports Airport technology.
A garden area, with a mosque in the middle, designed for 2,000 people, measures 46,200 m².
The main passenger terminal is a six-storey building with 15 gates, designed to accommodate future expansion. It also has 11 fixed passenger bridges, which will be expanded to 31 in the future.
The third floor of the building is for arrivals, the fourth floor is for boarding, the sixth floor is for departures and the others are for passenger services. For boarding, 66 counters are used by Nas Air and Saudi Arabian Airlines, 44 counters are for foreign airlines and the rest serve the Immigration and Customs departments
But a Royal Terminal has also been built, which is intended only for the use of the Saudi royal family and VIP personalities such as heads of state, kings and government officials. This terminal is luxuriously furnished and has four bridges that connect to the aircraft.
In the case of the international arrivals terminal, the building has restaurants, banks, cafes, a gift shop and a taxi rank. The mezzanine level houses a library and presentation room, as well as an observation gallery and a restaurant. There are numerous exchange offices and ATMs in both the arrivals and departures halls.
The airport also has a catering building for passenger, crew and aircraft services. Every day, meals are prepared for passengers on 8,000 aircraft and 1,000 airport employees.
In addition, 300 meals can be accommodated in the Royal Pavilion, a reception room exclusively intended for the King, the royal family and their personal guests.
For aircraft take-off and landing, there are two parallel runways that can support the weight of large aircraft. The two parallel runways (16R/34L and 16L/34R) are 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide, allowing simultaneous take-off and landing.
Finally, the parking building is mentioned, which offers space for 4,500 vehicles. (JO)
