As every year, Internet users vote for the word that best reflects the past twelve months. A jury composed of linguists under the patronage of the Polish Language Council also selects its favorites. In recent years, the winners were “war”, “vaccination” and “coronavirus”. How is it this year?
Linguists have decided. Artificial intelligence is the Word of the Year 2023
On Thursday (January 4), there was an online broadcast during which the organizers announced the Word of the Year 2023. The first place in the votes of linguists was taken by “”. Then they pointed to “elections”. Third place ex aequo was “inflation” and “MP”. The chapter also mentioned “march”, “marshal”, “minister”, “opposition” and “pathodeveloper” as equally important in the past year.
Internet users also voted at the same time. Here the results were slightly different. According to them, the most important word of 2023 was “elections”. However, “artificial intelligence” came in second place. Words or expressions such as “patodeweloperka”, “guests”, “opposition”, “referendum” and “grenatnik” also received more than 100 votes. – Although “grenade launcher” should be the word of the year 2022, it appeared in the media throughout 2023 – noted prof. at the conference. These were words that appeared in Polish dailies relatively more often than in the last five years. Internet users could also submit their own proposals, but none of them exceeded the threshold of a dozen or so votes

Artificial intelligence also won abroad
A similar plebiscite has been organized by the Collins English Dictionary publishing house since 2013. This time the winner was Artificial Intelligence. “‘Artificial intelligence’, a term describing “modeling of human mental functions by computer programs”, was recognized as the Word of the Year 2023. Considered as the next great technological revolution, artificial intelligence has seen rapid development and was widely discussed in 2023″ – the organizer of the competition. Word Cambirdge Dictionary also pointed out AI-related issues. The winner was “hallucinaton”, which recently received a new definition. It now also refers to artificial intelligence that generates false information.
