Website that Google is apparently planning to delete the next version of the driver interface in Maps. This is quite a surprising decision, because the so-called Car mode was introduced in 2022 when the control panel that made it easier to use basic phone functions while navigating was removed.
A useful function may disappear from Google Maps. What in exchange?
9to5Google noticed a provision in the Google Maps code suggesting that the car mode will be withdrawn in February 2024. Additionally, there is also information that in order to “call, send a message or play multimedia while navigating”, you should touch the microphone icon and voice the command to the Google Assistant.
By 2022, when using Google navigation, we could slide out the panel with the most useful functions. From there, you could easily make a call, dictate a message, or turn on music or a podcast. However, this solution was replaced by the so-called car mode, where the Phone, Messages and Music player applications are expanded from the black bar at the bottom of the screen. They can also be displayed directly below the map view.
Both solutions were somewhat reminiscent of the Android Auto view that is displayed on screens in the cockpits of some cars. Owners of older cars that do not support this solution had to settle for car mode. It seems that this solution will also be deleted. It’s a pity, especially since Google introduced it in the world quite recently and was still reluctant to officially launch the function in Poland.
What will we get in return? It turns out that probably nothing. As we mentioned earlier, Google probably wants us to use the Assistant and give it commands by voice. People who don’t particularly like talking to their phone will probably have to close the Maps application every time and manually search for the necessary applications on the phone screen. Unless Google decides to replace the car mode with a completely new solution.
