Unlike its competitors, Prime Video has not changed its subscription prices for a long time, which are extremely low. In recent months, Netflix, YouTube Premium and music services have introduced (often significant) price increases and fought against sharing accounts. Apparently, Amazon has found another way to increase profits.
Amazon Prime Video with ads. There is a way to free yourself from them
Additional advertisements will be added to the website. It is true that Prime Video already has short spots before some movies that you can skip straight away. However, the website wants to introduce full advertisements that will be displayed not only at the beginning, but also during the session (and most likely will not be skippable). Customers have just received e-mails in which Amazon informs that the change will enter into force on January 29, 2024, i.e. in just a month.
As we read in the emails quoted by , advertising is to be a way to “further invest in attractive content.” Amazon writes that the ads will be “limited” and there will be fewer of them than on TV. At the same time, the company promises that in return it will not increase the subscription price for the package covered by advertising. “We aim to have significantly less advertising than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required on your part and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership,” the service writes to customers.
At the same time, Prime Video is introducing an optional fee of $2.99 per month that will allow you to completely block ads in your package. Amazon therefore wants to give customers a difficult choice – either they value their time more and will pay extra for a package without ads, or they will have to bother with commercials interrupting the viewing.
Advertisements not in Poland yet. Prime Video is record cheap
On January 29, the ads will appear in the US, Canada, UK and Germany. Later they will also be delivered to France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia. However, Amazon does not mention Poland, where the Prime Video package is extremely cheap. Poles can use the website for just PLN 10.99 a month or PLN 49 a year (which is only PLN 4 a month). This is many times less than Americans pay for Prime Video ($8.99 per month) and definitely less than the cheapest package, e.g. on Netflix (PLN 29 per month in Poland).
Therefore, it would be naive to think that Amazon will never decide to increase the subscription price or introduce advertising in our country. Sooner or later it will probably finally happen. The question is whether, like the Americans or the British, we will be given a choice – we value our time and comfort more or money.
