A change for millions of Poles. A new generation of television is coming. What’s next with Teletext? [PODCAST]

The current standard is the digital DVB-T standard, which replaced analog TV in 2013. In the second quarter of 2022, a new standard for digital terrestrial television will enter into force in Poland – DVB-T2 / HEVC. 2 million households may lose access to digital terrestrial television because their receivers are not prepared to receive the signal in the DVBT-2 standard.

TechnoTerapia is a technological podcast of Gazeta.pl. In the new episode, Daniel Maikowski and Robert Kędzierski about the upcoming television revolution that will affect millions of Poles. What does the advent of the DVB-T2 standard mean for us? What’s next for Teletext?

What does DVB-T2 / HEVC give us?

– better sound and image quality;

– each channel in HD (720p) or Full HD (1080p) resolution;

– the possibility of broadcasting a signal in 4K resolution;

– HbbTV hybrid television, i.e. modern Teletext.

Why was the change necessary?

Launch of the new standard is in a way forced by the decision of the European Commission, according to which part of the band currently used by terrestrial television must be allocated to the development of 5G mobile telephony.

In the case of Poland, until 2022 terrestrial television multiplexes have to release the 694-790 MHz band, which will be allocated to the needs of 5G. When moved to a frequency below 694 MHz, terrestrial television will theoretically have less space, but thanks to the implementation of the DVB-T2 standard on the currently available multiplexes, more channels will still fit.

Do I need to replace the TV?

Almost all TV sets sold for several years offer support for DVB-T2, but some of them can only read the image encoded with the older video coding standard, i.e. AVC, and not the newer HEVC, which is necessary to watch new generation terrestrial TV.

When choosing a new TV set in the store, make sure that it supports:

  • Standard DVB-T2
  • HEVC image compression (H.265)
  • E-AC3 audio compression (Dolby Digital Plus)
