At least ten people were killed and thirty injured in a shooting at Charles University in Prague on Thursday, according to the first media reports in the Czech Republic.

“An unknown person opened fire on the Faculty of Philosophy of Prague’s Charles University, on Jan Palach Square, shortly after 3 p.m. (2 p.m. GMT), Radio Prague International reported in the heart of the capital.

Equipped with a long rifle with a telescopic sight, the aggressor continued shooting after police arrived on the scene until he was finally killed.

The shooter has been eliminated! “At the moment the entire building is being evacuated and there are several dead and dozens of injured on the spot,” the Czech police wrote on their X account (formerly Twitter).

In another message, he called on citizens not to take to the streets.

“All emergency services are currently on site. “We will provide more information as soon as possible,” police said.

On social networks, students of the above-mentioned faculty shared information about people who remained sheltered in the classrooms or in the university library, before the authorities began to evacuate the educational center.

Some media quoted witnesses as saying they heard an explosion.

The officers cordoned off the entire area and closed off traffic and public transport in the area. (JO)
