On the night of December 19-20, the Sejm voted on a draft resolution “on the restoration of legal order and the impartiality and reliability of the public media and the Polish Press Agency”. On Wednesday, the new Minister of Culture, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, appointed new public media authorities. Paweł Majcher became the new president of Polish Radio, Tomasz Sygut of Polish Television, and Marek Błoński of PAP.
The new authorities of the public media encountered resistance from a group of TVP employees who, using the support of PiS politicians, are trying to block the changes. On Wednesday, there was an open conflict, as a result of which the TVP Info signal was turned off. Access to the tvp.info portal was also blocked. On TVP1 at At 7.30 p.m. instead of “Wiadomości”, a short statement by journalist Marek Czyż was broadcast.
No Polish citizen who finances public media is obliged to listen to propaganda. He has the right to expect reliable and objective information. “Wiadomości” will show photography of Poland and the world. A photograph, not a painting. The painting was painted in party colors for eight years. There will be no “Wiadomości” today, but tomorrow we will provide you with a reliable information program. Instead of propaganda soup, we will offer you clean water
– he said, addressing the audience. Meanwhile, the current TVP “Wiadomości” team broadcast its program using the Republika TV antenna. .
Teletext TVP
Teletext is the last stronghold of PiS on TVP. Not any more
Since the former TVP authorities and members of the journalistic team lost access to the TVP Info antenna and the tvp.info portal, they tried to use other ways to reach television viewers. Initially, the station tried to broadcast its program on YouTube and Facebook, but these profiles have already been taken over by the new public media authorities.
There are two other channels left. The first is portal X (formerly Twitter). The former TVP authorities still distribute their message here. Only in the last few hours, there have been several entries suggesting that the takeover of public media was “illegal”.
Teletext TVP
The second communication channel, forgotten by many, was… Teletext. Just yesterday, the following message appeared on Telegazeta’s website:
Illegal cancellation of public media authorities: TVP, PR, Polish Press Agency, but you will no longer be able to find out about it, because the broadcasting of the TVP Info channel and the tvp.info portal has just been illegally disabled – said PiS MP Piotr Muller.
Chairman of the National Broadcasting Council, Maciej Świrski, stated that the dismissal of the management and supervisory boards of public media by the Minister of Culture is a gross violation of the law.
Ultimately, however, Telegazeta also fell into the hands of the new TVP authorities. Currently, pages 110 to 139, which present news from Poland and around the world, have been completely disabled. When you go from page 109, you are automatically taken to page 140 with business information.
Teletext still exists today
In the 1980s and 1990s, Teletext was what the Internet is for many of us today. Millions of Poles used it to check news from the country, TV programs and view advertisements. Teletext has been operating continuously for over 35 years and although its glory days are behind it, it still has a group of dedicated users.
This may come as quite a surprise to some, but Teletext still operates today. It is still edited by a team of a dozen or so people – it is supplemented by the News section and adds, among others, the latest sports results. Viewers can add announcements, comments and Christmas wishes via text messages.
You can even find the current advertising price list on the Telegazeta website. For example, if we want to place information on the standard bar on the title page, we will pay PLN 984 for 7 days.
At a time when we have fast Internet on our smartphones and Teletext is heavily cluttered, maintaining it seems pointless, but it still has a group of dedicated users.
