The Republican Donald Trump cannot participate in the 2024 Colorado primary because he “disqualified” to take control of the presidency of the United States, the state’s legal system ruled Tuesday.

Trump’s campaign, a favorite among Republican candidates running for the White House, immediately responded by promising to appeal the court’s ruling. Colorado Supreme Court that shook the political arena of the United States.

“The majority of the court finds that President Trump is disqualified from presidential office under the third section of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution.”, says the court.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court emphasized that it had not reached its decision ‘lightly’.

“We are aware of the magnitude and weight of the issues before us. We are also aware of our solemn obligation to apply the law, without fear or favor, and without being influenced by public reactions to the decisions the law requires of us.”.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits Americans from running for office. if they took part in an uprising after promising to defend Magna Carta.

The amendment, ratified after the Civil War (1861–1865), was intended to prevent supporters of the slaveholding Confederacy from being elected to Congress or holding federal office.

The court’s decision stems from a lawsuit filed by a group of voters, with the support of the non-governmental group Citizens for responsibility and ethics (CREW), which argues that Trump is ineligible to run for president due to the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by his supporters.

“Trump incited a violent mob to attack our Capitol to stop the peaceful transfer of power under our ConstitutionCREW attorney Eric Olson said in his opening argument.

“January 6 was an insurrection against the Constitution,” Olson said. “Trump participated in that insurrection.”

Judge Sarah Wallace of Denver ruled that Trump participated in an insurrection, but that allowed him to compete The third part of the amendment does not apply to those vying for the presidency.

But voters, with CREW’s support, appealed, prompting the Supreme Court’s response. (JO)
