Third-party payment systems will appear on iPhone

Reuters: Apple invited the EU to open the Apple Pay payment system to competitors

Apple Corporation invited competitors to use the payment service on their devices. Reuters reports this.

At least three sources told the agency about the offer of the American company made during the ongoing antitrust investigation of the European Commission (EC). According to insiders, such a gesture on the part of Tim Cook’s corporation will allow the charges of European Union (EU) regulators to be dropped and protect Apple from huge fines.

If the corporation’s competitors accept the proposal, European regulators may stop the investigation. Also in this case, third-party payment services will appear on Apple smartphones.

Sources said that in January the EC will hand over the proposal to European companies competing with Apple in the local market. The case could then be settled, with Apple avoiding a fine of 10 percent of revenue. Representatives of the European Commission declined to comment, and it was not possible to receive feedback from Apple.

Apple Pay is a service exclusive to iPhone and other Apple devices that appeared in 2014, which allows users to pay for purchases via NFC. In the spring of 2022, the payment service stopped working in Russia.

In September, Apple introduced the iPhone 15 series smartphones. The devices featured a USB-C port for the first time: apparently, Apple replaced the Lightning connector with it due to new EU regulations.
