Colombian President Gustavo Petro has revoked a decree signed by his predecessor, Iván Duque, which authorized police to seize the minimum dose of drugs in public areasbecause he believes that the institution should pursue the big bosses and not the consumers.
“If the constitution allows personal dosing, police activities should not focus on pursuing drug users, but rather on prosecuting major drug lords and prosecuting crimes that affect civilians.“, the president said on the social network X on Saturday.
He added that “certain sectors of the press confuse police violations reflected in the police code with crime, which is reflected in criminal law”.
With what was signed by the government, the document that had amended another decree partially regulating the National Police and Coexistence Law was annulled.relating to the prohibition of possessing, possessing, supplying, distributing or marketing prohibited drugs or substances”.
This rule was introduced by the Duque government in October 2018.
