You order a product online, and then pick it up at a parcel machine or at the doorstep of the apartment, straight from the hands of the courier. Such shopping is already our everyday life for many of us, and this generates a gigantic number of disposable packaging. According to InPost, 640 million parcels were sent in Poland alone in 2020, and this year there may be even more.
InPost introduces reusable packaging
Now the company responsible for the Paczkomaty phenomenon has launched a new service. It will deliver products packed in ecological, reusable packaging. The principle of operation will be very simple. The store packs the product in special packaging provided by InPost, the courier delivers the package to the customer, and the customer – after taking out the purchases – returns the carton to the parcel locker. Finally, it is returned to the store, where it can be reused after disinfection.
As the company explains, the cartons will be marked with a special code, which – after scanning – will allow them to be put back in the parcel locker. They will also fold to save space when transported to the store. According to Rafał Brzoska, president of InPost, the wide availability of Parcel Lockers is to make such a system actually work.
With the current growth of the e-commerce market, there is only one direction – logistics must be modern, efficient and even more ecological. That is why we are introducing the first Polish system of recycling packaging in e-commerce. The packages are sized to the shipped product, so as not to transport air. As a market leader, we believe that the availability of InPost parcel lockers and the ease of use of them will enable the introduction of a truly effective system for trading in returnable packaging.
– says Brzoska quoted
InPost calculates that one package should withstand sending products to customers even 10 times. This, in turn, should reduce the demand for packaging by a factor of 10. The carton will be able to be returned to one (any) of 15 thousand. Parcel lockers in Poland at the most convenient time for you.
InPost also boasts that it is the first company in Poland (and perhaps in Europe) to introduce ecological reusable packaging. The first company to join the project is MODIVO, the e-commerce platform of eobuwie.pl. However, the president of InPost invites all interested stores selling online to join the campaign and send parcels in reusable packaging.
Will the new idea of the Polish giant actually work on a large scale? Time will tell. Much depends on whether customers actually want to return empty packaging back to Parcel Lockers.
