Former US first lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of former President Jimmy Carter, has died at her home in Georgia at the age of 96, the couple’s nonprofit organization announced.
“Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a passionate advocate for mental health, healthcare and women’s rights, died at 2:10 PM on Sunday, November 19, at her home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 96. “He died peacefully with his family by his side,” the Carter Center said in a statement.
Last Friday, Rosalynn Carter received palliative care at home. She and her 99-year-old husband received this care together.
The statement added that she was married for 77 years to Jimmy Carter, who also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
“She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. While Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew someone loved and supported me,” the former president said.
The family is survived by their children Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy, as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
“His life of service and compassion was an example to all Americans. She will be deeply missed not only by our family, but by the many people who have better mental health care and access to health care services today,” said Chip Carter. (JO)
