The United States has deported more than 380,000 migrants over the past seven months who failed to demonstrate a “legal basis” to remain in the country. The American Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported this on Thursday.

In a statement, DHS explained that several flights departed from the US to India this Thursday, EcuadorPeru, Venezuela and Central American countries with deported migrants.

Among those evicted were singles and families who had no legal basis to remain in the country.

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), in charge of deportations, has multiplied the number of flights carrying deportees since May last yearwhen Title 42 was no longer implemented, a measure that allowed for the immediate deportation of undocumented immigrants for health reasons.

Since May 2023, ICE has deported more than 380,000 people, 60,000 of whom have family members. The figure is five times the number of deportations in all of 2022, when 72,177 immigrants were expelled to more than 150 countries around the world.

Among the 380,000 deportees are migrants sent directly to Venezuela and Cuba. On October 18, the US resumed direct repatriation of Venezuelan citizens, after four years of suspending the practice.

On October 26, Cuba received the seventh flight of migrants deported from the United States since both countries agreed nearly a year ago to reactivate air returns. (JO)
