There are new reports of new frauds almost every day, but criminals still use proven schemes because they seem to be effective. The police from Płock admit that despite regular educational activities, unaware seniors still fall into the trap of fraudsters.
He donated PLN 220,000. PLN in cash. He thought he was helping his wife
According to the police, the injured person is a 71-year-old resident of Płock who recently received a phone call from the (false) police station. He was called by a fraudster pretending to be a policewoman who informed him about the alleged arrest of the wife of a 71-year-old man. The woman allegedly caused a road accident in which a pregnant woman was injured.
The fake policewoman informed the 71-year-old that his wife had been detained for investigation, but could be released on bail. This was set at PLN 220,000. zlotys and – as the woman on the phone said – could be transferred in cash to the alleged lawyer assigned to the wife. Instead of going to the police station himself, the injured party unfortunately agreed to the conditions presented.
Shortly afterwards, a man pretending to be his wife’s lawyer knocked on his door and collected the agreed amount. When the injured man realized that he had fallen victim to fraud, it was too late. The money could not be recovered.
The officers remind us that the police never inform us by phone about the cases they are investigating and do not ask us to transfer money to anyone or use it in any actions aimed at arresting alleged fraudsters. Police officers advise to always apply the principle of limited trust in telephone contacts, especially when the caller introduces himself as, for example, a relative, policeman, prosecutor or official.
